Google Ads Budget Calculator (2026 Benchmarks)
A Google Ads cost calculator for owners who want a monthly budget, a daily budget, and a cost per lead they can compare with a real industry benchmark.
How much does Google Ads cost?
Monthly Google Ads budget = (leads wanted / conversion rate) x cost per click. Enter that monthly figure divided by 30.4 as your daily budget. Across 13,474 US search campaigns (WordStream/LocaliQ, April 2025 to March 2026), the average click cost $5.42 and the average lead cost $66.69. Legal leads averaged $131.63.
Your estimate
Results for Home & Home Improvement
A monthly media budget of $2,069.57 is about $68.08 a day in Google Ads. That buys about 248.4 clicks and 20 leads, at $103.48 per lead. That is above the $90.92 WordStream benchmark for Home & Home Improvement.

How the math works
The calculator uses your numbers for the plan, and the WordStream table only as a comparison. Your cost per lead is not the same thing as the published industry cost per lead.
- Clicks
- Leads wanted / conversion rate. In budget mode, clicks = monthly budget / cost per click.
- Monthly media budget
- Clicks x cost per click. In goal mode that is (leads / conversion rate) x cost per click.
- Daily budget
- Monthly media budget / 30.4. Google uses 30.4 as the average number of days in a month for most campaigns.
- Your cost per lead
- Cost per click / conversion rate. This is your math, not the industry benchmark.
- Break-even cost per lead
- Close rate x average customer value. This is the most a lead can cost before the expected customer value is gone.
- Estimated return
- Leads x close rate x customer value, minus the all-in monthly cost.
- All-in monthly cost
- Media spend plus a management fee. The fee can be a flat amount or a percent of media spend. It is off unless you turn it on.
- ROAS
- Revenue / ad spend. Break-even ROAS = 1 / profit margin. A 25% margin breaks even at 4x.
Worked example: 20 Home & Home Improvement leads, using the 2026 benchmark click cost of $8.33 and conversion rate of 8.05%. That needs $2,069.57 a month, or $68.08 a day, for about 248.4 clicks. Your cost per lead in that example is $103.48. The published benchmark cost per lead is $90.92. Those two figures differ because each WordStream metric is its own median across campaigns, so benchmark cost per lead is not benchmark CPC divided by benchmark conversion rate.

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?
A small business should spend enough to buy a readable sample of leads at a cost per lead the business can afford. Google Ads cost is not one national price. In the 2026 WordStream/LocaliQ sample, the average click cost $5.42 and the average lead cost $66.69. Legal leads averaged $131.63. Arts and entertainment leads averaged $26.84.
Use the goal mode if you know the leads you need. Twenty home improvement leads, at that industry benchmark, come out to $2,069.57 in media, or $68.08 as the daily budget. If that monthly number is larger than you can spend, switch to budget mode and see how many leads the amount you do have can buy.
Then check two more things. First, the learning line: Google says Search and Shopping campaigns need at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days before Target ROAS is available. At the home improvement benchmark, 15 leads would take about $1,552.17 in media. A smaller test can still run, but it will not tell you much. Second, profit: a cost per lead below the industry figure is not automatically a good one. Enter your close rate and customer value so the break-even cost per lead is yours, not an average.
Keep the management fee out of the media budget until you want the all-in number. A percent of spend fee rises when the media budget rises. A flat fee does not. CleverBoss is headquartered in Melbourne, Florida and works with businesses across the United States, so the right spend still depends on the market you actually serve, not on a Florida-only average.
Google Ads budget questions
How much should I spend on Google Ads per month?
There is no single correct monthly spend. Start from the number of leads you want. Clicks equal those leads divided by the conversion rate, and the monthly media budget equals those clicks times the cost per click. Divide that monthly figure by 30.4 to get the average daily budget to enter in Google Ads. In the WordStream/LocaliQ 2026 sample of 13,474 US search campaigns, the average cost per lead was $66.69. A plan is useful only when that cost still leaves room for your close rate, customer value, and any management fee.
What is the average Google Ads cost per lead by industry?
WordStream/LocaliQ reported these 2026 search cost per lead figures from the same US sample: Attorneys and Legal Services $131.63, Furniture $106.70, Real Estate $102.51, Apparel / Fashion and Jewelry $97.51, Business Services $93.69, and Home and Home Improvement $90.92. The lowest figure in that table was Arts and Entertainment at $26.84. The overall average was $66.69. These are published medians, not a quote for your account. The full table is on this page.
How do I set a daily budget?
Google Ads uses an average daily budget. For most campaigns, the monthly spending limit is that daily budget multiplied by 30.4, the average number of days in a month. To aim for a monthly media total, divide the monthly amount by 30.4 and enter the result as the average daily budget. Google may spend up to twice the daily budget on a busy day, and it still caps a full month at 30.4 times the daily budget for most campaigns.
What is a minimum budget the campaign can learn on?
This calculator flags a plan that would produce fewer than 15 leads in a month. Google states that Target ROAS for Search and Shopping campaigns needs at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days. At your conversion rate, the learning budget shown here is the media spend that would buy those 15 leads. It is a planning check. It does not mean every campaign must use Target ROAS, and it does not promise that a bid strategy will perform.
What is a good cost per lead?
A good cost per lead is one you can still profit from after the close rate and the value of a customer. Compare your calculated cost per lead with the industry benchmark, then compare it with your break-even cost per lead, which is the close rate times the average customer value. A cost per lead above the industry figure can still be healthy when closed customers are worth more than that cost.
Should I include agency fees in my budget?
Yes, if you want the full monthly cost. Media spend and a management fee are different bills. This calculator can add a flat fee or a percentage of media spend. The all-in monthly cost is media plus that fee. Leave the fee off if you only want the ad spend. CleverBoss separates those two numbers when it talks through a proposal.
How does a Google Ads budget differ from a Local Services Ads budget?
Google Ads search campaigns usually charge per click, with an average daily budget and a monthly limit of 30.4 times that daily amount for most campaigns. Local Services Ads are a separate Google product that charges per lead and uses its own budget. Do not paste a daily budget from this calculator into Local Services Ads and expect the same lead count. Use this page for search click campaigns.
How often are these benchmarks updated?
WordStream/LocaliQ publishes this search benchmark report about once a year. The industry figures on this page come from the 2026 report, covering campaigns that ran from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. The report page lists a last update of September 16, 2026. CleverBoss transcribed the industry table on October 11, 2026. We review the table when the next annual report is published.
Methodology and update log
Industry CPC, conversion rate, and cost per lead on this page were copied from the tables in the WordStream/LocaliQ article Google Ads Benchmarks 2026, published for campaigns running April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. The PDF at the same report confirms the overall averages, the sample of 13,474 campaigns, and the Google and Microsoft budget mix. Click-through rate by industry is not shown here because one Travel figure in the article text does not match the article table, and this page does not guess which one to use. The overall click-through rate of 6.64% is stated in both the article and the PDF.
The 2026 article says the published averages are median figures, used to limit the effect of outliers. Each industry includes at least 52 active campaigns. Report page last updated September 16, 2026. Data updated on this page: October 11, 2026. The next review is when WordStream publishes the following annual report, usually in the spring.
